The use of microformats for implementation of a semantic layer in web applications.
Nowadays a web application developer gets more and more involved with the fact that end users want to retrieve, consult end use data in a semantic way. This evolution has manifest itself by the rise of Web 2.0. According to Tim Berners-Lee and other visionaries the future of the web will be semantic. The Semantic Web, a place where machines can read web pages and extract useful information using cognitive decision-making ability emulating human beings.
In this research I look at the possibilities of adding semantic in current web applications.
Every professional web developer knows the n-tier model. I propose to add a layer that makes web applications more semantic in an easy way.
First I examine semantic web technologies as rdf and onthologies but they had to make room for microformats. Microformats are open data formats, based on existing and wide spread standards.
In the following stage I determine how the semantic layer takes shape and which functionalities it has to supply. Finally I elaborate some case studies, illustrating the advantages of the semantic layer.
